I had a chat with Wellington poet Helen Heath. She’s released two volumes of poetry, her first, Graft, was nominated for a science writing award and won Best First Book; her brand new collection, Are Friends Electric is a deep set of meditations on spiritual connectedness – a profound offering that is heartfelt and wise and uses many found poems within its range of poetic styles.
We talk about Wellington and juggling kids with creative writing, we talk about her time in bookstores and working publicity for Victoria University Press as well as science writing, concept albums, Black Mirror and speculative fiction; we talk Werner Herzog docos and the grip we have on our devices vs. the grip they have on us.
I had met Helen very briefly ahead of this chat but really felt I got to know here through this conversation. I’m a huge fan of her poetry.
Also well worth listening to is her recent chat with Pip Adam for her podcast, Better off Read.
I hope you enjoy episode 126 of Sweetman Podcast, my chat with Helen Heath.
