Here’s a chat I had with Emily Fairlight. She’s a Wellington-based singer/songwriter and poet. She’s recently released the fantastic Mother of Gloom album. And before that, a few years ago now, there was a self-titled debut.
I really love Mother of Gloom – it’s one of my favourite albums right now. So I was very keen to chat with Emily, to meet her properly in fact. We had been introduced at a gig sometime last year and I had enjoyed the one live set I saw her play as an opening act.
Since then there have been music videos, Facebook posts, and then the new album – recorded in America.
So we sat down to talk through all that and I found out a whole lot more. From favourite artists and influential songwriters to personal trauma – this one went pretty deep.
Emily is playing around the country currently – many of the shows in this tour have been and gone but tonight, Friday, May 25, she’s on at Lyttelton Records and on Saturday, June 2, she’ll be headlining the San Fran in Wellington.
She’s also playing support shows with French For Rabbits in Wellington at The Surgery on May 26 and May 27 and with Joshua Radin at The San Fran on May 29.
I hope you enjoy our conversation and plenty of snippets of her music for you to sample too. Check it out and buy the album and get along to a show, support this fantastic independent artist.
