Welcome to episode 112 of Sweetman Podcast with support from our sponsors – T Leaf T, Yeastie Boys and Le Petite Chocolat.
I had a conversation with Darren Watson. You might remember that he was the subject of the very first episode of Sweetman Podcast. If you want a career overview and you missed it at the time go back and listen to that chat, it’s nearly three years old now…
For this talk we are focussed on his brand new album, Too Many Millionaires. It’s out Ma 1, 2018 so here you’ll hear all about the writing and recording of it, the funding and making of it – and you’ll get to hear a few sneak snippets of the songs…
We also talk about the tour – Darren and his band will play shows around the country in support of this record – playing the album in full and some other songs from across his catalogue too. That tour starts in Wellington on May 3 (as Meow) and from there will Whanganui (Lucky, May 4), New Plymouth (Butlers, May 5), Palmerston North (The Globe, May 10), Hamilton (Nivara Lounge, May 11), Auckland (Wine Cellar (May 12), Featherston (Kiwi Hall, May 18, (Napier, Cabana, May 19 – as part of that venue’s 60th Anniversary celebrations), Nelson (Playhouse (May 24), Christchurch (Blue Smoke (May 25) and Dunedin (50 Dundas, May 26). So a FULL New Zealand tour – old-school styles…
We also talk about the album’s fantastic cover image – courtesy of Wellington-born artist Ewan McDougall and the liner notes that I wrote for the record (click there to read more about the album’s birth and sound).
I’m right there alongside DW in the belief that he’s made the best album of his career. I hope you enjoy it, sample it, buy it, and I hope you enjoy this conversation around the making of the record, the tour, the work Darren’s done across the last three years since I first spoke with him.
Please enjoy episode 112 of Sweetman Podcast, my conversation with Darren Watson about his upcoming new album, Too Many Millionaires.
