Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library. It’s on most of the podcast platforms besides the ones mentioned here.
This conversation is with Kate Spencer – aka CreatifKate. She is a full-time creative, both a performer and a producer. She is a writer and photographer, a comedian and MC, a host and producer and organiser of shows – including the Wellington Feminist Poetry Collective, Poetry in Motion, Imaginary Porno Charades and Naked Women Reading. For all of her shows and appearances you can check the link to her CreatifKate website above.
I have gotten to know Kate a wee bit over the last couple of years as I have re-entered the world of performance poetry. I’ve become a regular at the Poetry in Motion open-mics and I’ve seen Kate perform her own works and often MC the night. She was also one of the producers of Comedy Vs Poetry FACE/OFF at this year’s Fringe – and she included me in one of the poetry teams.
So we’ve been planning to have this chat for a few months now – and then of course Kate was out every night for the entire run of the Fringe Festival so I had to let her recover for a bit. But it seems this is the energy she runs on – her strength comes from performing and creating.
We talked about this when we finally did get to sit down for this chat a couple of weeks ago. I was also interested in the two communities she draws strength from – as she puts it, “The queers – and the church”. Seemed like a story there.
When this podcast starts you’ll hear my intro as always and then we dive straight into Kate reading an autobiographical poem. Trigger warnings here – emotional abuse, suicidal thoughts, but I wanted Kate to recite this particular poem to start not only because I think it’s great and very powerful and brave and moving – but also because it creates a template for our conversation.
My thanks to Kate for this very fun and rewarding chat. And again check out all of her going on at CreatifKate.
This is episode 260 of the podcast. My conversation with Kate Spencer.
