Welcome back to Sweetman Podcast for 2021. I posted the first episode for the year just last week. And now it’s time for a new one – so this is episode 245 of Sweetman Podcast with support from our sponsors – T Leaf T and Yeastie Boys
Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.
This is a conversation with John Wareham. He is an author, psychologist, lecturer, writing teacher. He’s a Pulitzer-nominated poet. He’s a memoirist, businessman, advocate for prison reform. He is also recently a podcaster himself. John wrote and recorded his podcast series, The Breakout Plan as a lockdown project. It’s a fascinating listen.
This was really the first proper meeting between me and John. We had corresponded some while ago and I had often thought he’d be a fascinating podcast guest. Then a chance meeting – he was at a poetry reading where I was the guest. We met. Chatted. And he agreed to be a podcast guest. A week or two later I was at his apartment recording this conversation.
Now, a couple of things – he gushes enthusiastically about my poetry towards the end of this conversation and despite my best efforts to edit this out entirely some ego got in the way.
It’s worth mentioning that this was recorded late last year – but just before the American lecture. Which will date some of the content.
Also about two thirds of the way through the podcast you might notice a slight dip – or change – in audio quality. My recording device ran out of room and I switched to a phone backup in the moment. So have stitched the two together.
What a thrill it was to have this conversation and to try to stitch together the various threads of a busy life filled with projects, activism and advocating and working with people at either ends of the spectrum that society considers ‘success’. There was more to talk about of course – but we did our best to get through some of the books, and his work around prison reform and addiction. We mentioned, in brief, his children – you’ll perhaps know some of their work too. So it was a huge chat. And I’m thrilled to finally have this as part of the Sweetman Podcast body of work.
Do check out John’s work.
And enjoy this – this is episode 245 – my conversation with John Wareham.
