Music Industry Legend Murray Cammick is the guest this week. Where to start with Murray…well we started by working out we’d only met very briefly a couple of times and we’d argued online about whether Bobby Womack still had it or not. Then we went right back to Murray first connecting with music – talked through his days at Rip It Up and founding Shake magazine too; from there to DJing, starting record labels, and his own photography – including his current exhibition which brought him to Wellington, here at Photospace Gallery.
A lot of NZ music history in here – the labels Southside and Wildside, the Rip It Up magazine and Shake as well, stories about hanging out with bands like Def Leppard and meeting Bob Marley…we talked a bit about interviewing – the good, the bad and the ugly.
It was great to finally get Murray’s story down on tape – or at least the version he told to me. I know he’s been interviewed a lot over the years but I’ve long wanted to have him as a guest on the podcast. Finally the timing was right.
I hope you enjoy this. I did. It was great to get the chance to sit down and talk to NZ Music Industry Royalty. Here now, my conversation with Murray Cammick, ONZM
