Sweetman Podcast # 231: Geoff Stahl

Welcome to episode 231 of Sweetman Podcast with support from our sponsors – T Leaf T and Yeastie Boys

Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.

Here I had a conversation with Geoff Stahl. He is Head of School for English, Film, Theatre and Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He is also a record collector and DJ (TV Disko).

Geoff grew up in Canada and moved to Wellington 15 years ago to take up a teaching position – as a Media Studies lecturer.

I first met Geoff back when he first moved here, I was tutoring one of the Media Studies courses at the time and I also used to see him at gigs. As is the case with music fans. We also both DJ’d at a David Bowie tribute night. I’ve long wanted to have a chat with Geoff for the podcast because I’m fascinated in the subject of Media Studies – the course was established after I left university. I missed my window, in some sense. Also I love a lot of his work as TV Disko – he makes mixtapes, hosts radio shows, and takes his exotic and wild collection of records to play in bars and at parties in Wellington – and on occasion around the country.

So we talked about all of this – his teaching and his fascination with music, his DJing and collecting. But we also talked about teaching in the time of the pandemic, conducting lectures via video conferencing.
