Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.
Mike White is one of New Zealand’s best longform writers (he hates the term “longform” but we all use it now). He started on newspapers and one of the stories that has defined him – and that he has helped to define for all of us – that of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope’s disappearance, started as one of his jobs early on in his tenure at the Marlborough Express. He left New Zealand to freelance, including war correspondence, and returned to the role he has held ever since, as feature writer for North & South. There he has revisited the ongoing Ben and Olivia story, brokering a meeting and reporting on it between Olivia’s father Gerald Hope and accused murderer Scott Watson.
He has also covered in depth the Mark Lundy and Scott Guy cases that gripped the nation. Even writing an excellent book about the murder of Scott Guy. His most recent book is about another of his passions – dogs: How To Walk A Dog was published late last year and is Mike’s story about his love of dogs and the dog in his life. But of course it’s about far more than that, it’s about the people that you meet and the person you become when a dog enters your life.
It was my great pleasure to get to sit with Mike and talk about his passions – dogs, and journalism.
We had only recently met, and just the one time ahead of this conversation. I was freelance producing at RNZ earlier this year and called on him for a segment about Ben and Olivia and the ongoing case. It’s a great segment if you haven’t heard it – a case overview detailing Mike’s direct involvement. He was the scholar and gent I expected from the small correspondence we’ve had over the years and I’ve long been a fan of his work. So it was great to meet him – albeit briefly.
At that point we had already discussed this podcast and it had gone on hold as 2019 sped away from us all in its final weeks.
So I’m glad we got to sit and have this chat – a few weeks ago now (the world is changing daily as you’re reading/listening to this).
Please enjoy this conversation.
I mentioned a Pulitzer Prize winning piece of writing during our chat. Here’s a link to that piece. Be warned – it is a very sensitive subject and a compelling piece of journalism.
Here now is episode 213 of Sweetman Podcast – my conversation with Mike White
