Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.
Welcome to 2020 – and the first podcast conversation for this year was recorded in late 2019, a chat with poet and photographer Mary Macpherson. Shortly after this conversation was recorded Mary and I were part of a group of poets reading together on a Sunday just before Christmas.
I first met Mary a year or so ago – but have followed her photographic work and her various writings for a few years ahead of that.
In particular her book Old New World from 2012 means a lot to me, it’s one of my favourite books of photos.
Mary’s debut full-length poetry collection, Social Media was released in the last quarter of 2019 and so this conversation features us ranging across poetry and photography – the two subjects and hobbies are both hear to Mary’s heart of course but she treats them separately, keeps them almost entirely separate in fact.
So here you’ll hear some readings from the new volume of poetry and our conversation around that book, her photography books, her passion for the visual arts and her writing.
This conversation was recorded up at the house Mary shares with her partner, the photographer Peter Black. If you missed my earlier conversation with Peter you can click here to hear that as Mary is mentioned in it, just as Peter is mentioned in this one.
You can follow Mary on Instagram: @macpherson.mary
I loved getting some of her thoughts and readings on tape. And I hope you enjoy hearing them.
