Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.
Steve Francis is the drummer and driving force behind Wellington metal band Bulletbelt. He’s also a devotee to the genre – obsessed with metal since a teenager he collects heavy metal music on vinyl, from Poison to Napalm Death and back and down every side-avenue possible. I went to Steve’s house to check out his drums, his impressive collection of metal vinyl and the walls and walls of toys – action figures, comic characters – he’s obsessed, in particular, with The Joker. And skateboards.
Steve is also obsessed with horror films and is heavily tattooed. These were all talking points in our conversation – but we kept coming back to music. For the most part. His integration into Wellington’s metal scene – seeing the early shows by Shihad and the like. His own early bands and then, after some time out, his rebirth as a family man and swimming coach and the birth of Bulletbelt.
They famously provided a song for the movie Deathgasm. So we talked about that too of course.
I’ve known Steve a wee bit ahead of this conversation – corresponding online and meeting in real life. But this chat was my first time hearing his full story.
I hope you enjoy hearing it too.
