Sweetman Podcast # 174: Matt Hyde (Beastwars)

Welcome to episode 174 of Sweetman Podcast with support from our sponsors – T Leaf T, Yeastie Boys and La Petite Chocolat.

Now – as you probably know, as well as the usual platforms (this site, soundcloud, iTunes/Apple) you can now get to Sweetman Podcast on Spotify – follow it there and have it saved in your Spotify library.

Matt Hyde is the lead singer of Beastwars. He was out front over the last decade as the awesome Wellington-based, world-beating metal band released three excellent albums. And then they broke up.

Matt was diagnosed with cancer but he responded well to his initial treatment. The cancer is, for now, at bay. And the band regrouped to record new songs. Those songs sat on the shelf waiting –they are due to be released now as IV – the reformed band’s fourth (and best) album. They’re touring again. Saying thank you to the fans that stood by them.

So Matt sat down to talk about all of this with me. We’ve met a few times over the years – but this was my first time talking to Matt for more than a few minutes. He was very candid as he talked through his early years and how he was close to quitting music for good (for perhaps the second time in his life) when Beastwars came to be.

We talked about his cancer, his treatment and how he has been thankful for the disease; how it has changed him.

I loved this talk. I love the new album. Matt Hyde has been very brave in both his battle with his health and in his series of talks with various media as the band reforms and goes on the road once again.

Here now is episode 174 of Sweetman Podcast – my chat with Beastwars’ lead singer Matt Hyde.
