I had never met Harry Lyon but I’d grown up with his music in my ears – I loved so much of what Hello Sailor did, and was lucky to see them in their final years a handful of times (they always sounded great). I loved Coup D’etat too. And then, after 50 years of playing and being in the business in a variety of guises – as student and teacher – Harry Lyon released a wonderful solo album. It’s one of my favourite records of this year. And it’ll be a great soundtrack to summer – do check it out if you haven’t already.
So I dropped Harry a line.
He agreed to have a chat when he was in Wellington for a show. We met at his motel – I turned up at the exact time that the band did; they’d very much just got off the plane and there was a one-hour window for a chat before they headed in for soundcheck.
So Harry and I chatted about the bands from his past and the legacy of Sailor and his role now as a solo act and a survivor. We talked through this impressive new album too. And at one point the fire alarm goes off right as I ask a question…it was pretty funny, so I left it in there…
It was so nice to meet Harry – I’d always heard that he was a scholar and a gent. Every word of that is true. And I loved this conversation. I hope you do too.
