I’m not sure I’ve ever paid money to hear someone speak. (A spoken-word show or lecture I mean, not counting Writers Festival panels, stand-up comedy and theatre). But if there was ever anyone I would pay money to see talk it’s John Waters. (Actually it’s probably Henry Rollins too). But I’ve been lucky to see Rollins (in a reviewing capacity) and so was the case, also, with John Waters.
I don’t even know how I (first) got on to Waters. Myth I guess.Just hearing about him – probably from working in a video store, finding those cult films and traces of them…I think I’d seen one or two (of the straighter, safer) Waters films before I ever knew of him as such.
And then there’s the books – wonderful, glorious books. He’s getting better as he ages. This crazy (‘filthy’) world makes more sense for having Waters in it, or he makes more sense now. Or something. Or both of those things…
Anyway, what a great show – I had interviewed him beforehand, my great privilege and though I knew most of what he might say in our chat and then a lot of what he was going to say on stage for the show it was still all a joy. He’s a master.
