Stubs: # 278 – Teju Cole: Blind Spot, Wellington, 2018

Most days I think about Teju Cole’s book Blind Spot (and how wonderful it is). And sometimes I remember how lucky I was to see him not just once but twice in the same weekend.

Just recently I found the stub for that first show – and remembered that it was slightly derailed by tech issues and by Cole’s arrogance for not agreeing to front for the simplest of sound checks – but it was still great even with this nuisance.

Day two though. That was superb. Paula Morris – perhaps our most consistent interviewer/moderator in the book-festival/literary-event space – was great in conversation with Cole. And he was more relaxed and flowed freely through favourite photographers and key moments in his own biography; through the integration of text and images and the decisions at various times to just publish words or just concentrate on photos. And of course his role as a photography critic.

Really inspiring. So lucky to see both of these shows – but especially this one.
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
