Though I loathe the term ‘Bucket List’ I’ll use it here for shorthand and due to familiarity…I never quite realised that James Taylor would be a Bucket List Gig for me until it was announced that he was touring. I’ve been a fan forever – at first somewhat forced one me; the greatest hits albums played relentlessly as part of childhood car trips but then I developed my own relationship with the music (and his complicated back-story). Taylor is a class act and his continued career is a story of evolving redemption. He’s also a kick-arse guitarist with a honeyed voice and a phenomenal backing band. When this show was announced I was all-in. That it was going to be at a fucking vineyard – in Hawke’s Bay! – couldn’t even throw me off the scent. So I went. And it was so bloody good – actually the perfect sort of thing to see at a venue like that.
Great band, great performances, model setlist, great opening act, everything in place. Everything as it should be. One of the very best gigs I’ve been to in recent years. Not a total surprise, but a pleasant surprise of course.
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
