Stubs: # 249 – Rufus Wainwright, Wellington, 2019

There are these artists you like – maybe never totally love but always like enough…and Rufus Wainwright is a great example. I’d barely call myself a fan but this was the third time I’d seen him play – the first was a very special performance. The second was as opening act to Paul Simon (so a bonus really, I’d have gone to Paul Simon with no opening act or any opener at all) and then there was this time – Rufus focusing on his first two albums. Oddly, it highlighted that he’s really not up to much as a writer – but what a fucking singer. It’s the singer or it’s the song, I remember writing in my review. And thankfully, as singer alone Rufus gets it over the line. He’s written a song or two and many good lines within mediocre tunes too. But as a singer he will always succeed. And the covers on this night in particular highlighted just what a great singer he is. So it was a fine show. A very good show really. But I’ve never been enough of a fan to care any more than that.

Good enough to watch live – always. But I’m happy to call it quits at three times. That’s any amount I reckon.
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
