That’s right, it was the first Star Wars film aka Episode IV with the NZSO live in concert. You sat and watched the film on the big screen with a giant orchestra – our biggest and best-known covers band – playing the score live.
There were moments. But I didn’t really like it.
I was, too, wrestling with my own interest in Star Wars at that point. The new films just didn’t do a thing for me and the original trilogy was dying embers basically. I had some fond memories but no real need to rekindle.
I was also wrestling with a 6yo that couldn’t be fucked sitting still and got bored (and fair enough). Now I find myself with a nearly 8yo boy who, overnight, is obsessed with Star Wars. And is watching the first film for the first time now – and I’m watching it with him and it must be the 10th time I’ve seen it, or something like that. And I’m kinda digging it of course. Watching it, partly, through his eyes.
I do like the concert with live score. As a concept. But I just obviously wasn’t in the mood for it with this gig.
