It took until 2019 for me to visit Waiheke Island. For some odd reason I’ve kept the ferry ticket stub…hang on, I say some odd reason…what I mean was: This was an amazing holiday! My brother owns a house on the island – and finally we organised the time to go there, which meant flying to Auckland first off and then getting to the waterfront to catch the boat over, then a taxi up to their place. It was a weekend of swimming in a perfect, clear sea – sunning at the beach. Drinking wine, good food…
We were treated royally. My brother and his family were very generous. And it was the start of an amazing working-holiday for me. I spent nearly three weeks in Auckland at the start of the year, saw gigs, interviewed people for my podcast, did research for a book-project and met and made a few new contacts.
It all started with a few days on Waiheke – checking out the local markets, getting to survey some of the island – sure, it’s gentrified but the wild spirit of it is clearly still there. I hope it doesn’t take quite so long for me to get back there. Felt like being in another country.
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
