Shit this was good. I mean great. I mean really fucking good. Cos for some reason I kinda wasn’t expecting it to be. I love the Verlaines, sure. But I’d seen The Chills the night previous (this was billed as “The Dunedin Double” – though it was arbitrary, no anniversary or anything…) and I just figured that The Chills had packed ALL the tunes. And it was a problematic venue. But the Verlaines had snarl and spit and swagger. They had great songs too. And it was so, so good.
It’s a dream setlist – Pyromaniac, Crisis After Crisis, Joed Out, the Verlaines are tight but loose, sloppy in the right way, Downes stretches out on the guitar, channelling The Velvet Underground, Television and Neil Young, finding some cosmic common ground in fact. And if Yeats misses the odd cue it’s because these are songs that stretch and bend to make new time signatures, his drumming is part of the puzzle at any rate.
I loved seeing that show. And here’s something…it’s my one and only time seeing the Verlaines. To date.
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
