I was such a huge D’Angelo fan and I’m not sure I’ve listened to him since this show. In hindsight I was possibly a bit kind in my review, even – but of course I still had plenty of people telling me what I didn’t know. It was great on one level, sure. Super musicians. But it highlighted that the songs are nothing, are barely there. And it was the wrong venue for a big funk/groove-workout. It was lost. Muddy and missing in the mix and not intimate enough.
He was a late grab for the festival and I don’t think it really worked.
But then loads of others were happy just to see him. I can’t summon just that brand of enthusiasm – it has to mean something as well. And this kinda didn’t…
Stubs is an occasional feature here at Off The Tracks – looking back through the ticket-stub box and remembering how the show went down.
