Well it’s Film Festival time once again. And so by way of looking back I post this stub – not really all that exciting at all (though you might notice I’ve written a phone number on it, then scribbled that out…a hark back to landlines, and the days when the tickets sat next to the phone as scrap paper after…riveting!) – the time I went to the movie Soul Power.
Good flick, this. Another look at the concert that is part of the focus of the When We Were Kings doco; I loved (love) that film. And this was assembled from the offcuts, with more of a music focus. So, yeah, it’s the b-sides and leftovers and offcuts – but whatever it lacks as any sort of ‘great documentary’ is more than made up by so much footage of James Brown with that moustache. Less a great film, more a case of a good set of concert splinters.
In fact a great set of songs on here, from Brown and B.B. King – and we get to see a few of the other acts in more detail, most winningly Bill Withers. I remember his Hope She’ll Be Happier being the true standout.
