Technically, it’s a single. It was released as a single back in 1994 – even though it’s an interview. I believe it’s the highest-charting “interview” ever.
It is Liam and Noel, the Gallagher brothers of Oasis locked in a lunatic-rant against one another. It’s hilarious, embarrassing, stupid and invigorating. It was released right as Oasis was on the cusp of being a very big deal.
And it’s terrible.
But we used to listen to after work on the late shifts in the music store. Cracking up. And I bought a copy and took it home and we’d crack up at it there too. Like a comedy album. It was our Derek & Clive – at least for a little while.
And buried in there somewhere around the shouting voices of Noel and Liam is an interviewer; a savvy hack that knows to just sit back and lob a question now and then…
Noel and Liam have been shouting at each other in the press, or via the press, seemingly ever since this interview/rant-track first went to air.
I was never the biggest Oasis fan – I always enjoyed what they would say at least as much as what they would play – but there was a time when I was into it all; the pantomime, the pomp, the playing; first coupla albums and all the build-up and fall-out. And I saw them live and they were good, good enough, better than I thought they’d be, but the rot was setting in and the wheels were coming off.
This always reminds me of the absurdity of the band – and how that was ultimately the selling point.
I’ve always been a fan, too, of the interview-disc. Good, bad, and they’re usually pretty bad (and certainly only really worth hearing once) it was part of a way of showing your fandom. You were massively on board if you owned the interview disc too.
This one though, pretty much a stand-up comedy disc also. Up there with some of my favourites…
