Rob Hirst + Sean Sennett
Driver Reviver (ep)
Rob Hirst & Sean Sennett
Rob Hirst, erstwhile drummer for Midnight Oil, has kept busy in the wake (Ghostwriters, Backsliders) and is singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist too. But also he’s just a kick-ass rock drummer, really drives the songs – passionate in his playing, inventive and never ever showy at the expense of the tune; in short he’s a safe, safe pair of hands and the sort of super-sub you’d want on your team. Sean Sennett is a musician, songwriter and music journalist and he’s collaborated with Kate Cebrano and Steve Kilbey as well as various other projects.
He and Hirst first teamed in 2015 for the album Crashing The Sam Car Twice. They’re back now with a new EP of hooky garage-y psych-pop. The title track has hints of Midnight Oil, in the basic shape of it – if you go back to the Oils’ earliest albums, and again it’s that propulsive drumming of Hirst that takes us back to the sweaty-pub goodness of Garrett and Co.
Miss Amanda Wishing-Belle has a great soaring melody – and Hirst’s vocals are wonderful.
Opener, Nothing More / Nothing Less, kicks off with a classic post-punk riff, we’re in the world of The Stranglers or, again, the very earliest of the Oils (think their debut album) and then Hirst’s drums kick in and we’re on the journey.
That punk/ish riffing stays for Prove Yourself. Remember Jet. Now imagine if they’d channeled The Sonics.
Closer, The Man With The Star In His Hand, has another classic Midnight Oil sound to the guitar line but Sennett’s on lead vocal here and his singing (and the lyric) imagine a world where Midnight Oil welcomed The Go-Betweens into the fold.
Both artists have other new projects to get on with this year – but this little catch-up, this rekindling, is a welcome reminder of a great working partnership.”
