RNZ Reviews: June 2021

Once a month or so I have a chat on RNZ on their Afternoons show with Jesse Mulligan. I’ve been doing it for about five years now. Most months. This was my first time in for 2021.

This month I talked about two records from artists that have written their own songs but were here paying tribute to one other living songwriter. Tribute albums – but with the songs rearranged to suit the style of the new singer.

First up was Micky Dolenz of the Monkees singing songs by his Monkees pal Mike Nesmith. And I played the Dolenz take on the classic Different Drum.

Next was Chrissie Hynde’s lockdown set of Bob Dylan covers – released in time for Bob’s 80th Birthday. I played her version of Tomorrow Is A Long Time.

As always you can read my thoughts on the Dolenz album here and my thoughts on the Chrissie Hynde here.
