RNZ Reviews: July (2) 2020

Once a month or so I have a chat on RNZ on their Afternoons show with Jesse Mulligan. These things start – randomly and stop in much the same way. I hope to keep doing this. For a while at least. I think I started in December of 2015, so now four years into  it or so…

This was actually my second time in July – I got called up at the last minute to do a fill-in slot as another reviewer was away. I was on holiday and they called me in Taupo. Alas, the phone line was bad – so you won’t hear the first part of our conversation, including missing all but the outro of the first song. But I’ll include the songs here for you to check out – as I always do.

The theme I came up with was modern jazz supergroups, around the fact that there was a new EP/album by a group called Dinner Party (self-titled). And I played a song called Freeze Tag.

And fthe second thing I talked about was the new album by Joshua Redman which for the first time in 26 years features a reunion by the band from his third album, back in 1994. Back then they were lesser known talents – now they’re all known for their work as bandleaders and sideman – Redman (sax), Brad Mehldau (piano), Christian McBride (bass) and Brian Blade (drums). The album is called RoundAgain. And the song I played was called Right Back Round Again.

I’ve also written about both albums, Dinner Party’s self-titled debut and the Redman/Mehldau/McBride/Blade record, RoundAgain. So click those links to read my thoughts on them.
