RNZ Reviews: February 2021

Once a month or so I have a chat on RNZ on their Afternoons show with Jesse Mulligan. I’ve been doing it for about five years now. Most months. This was my first time in for 2021.

I didn’t review a whole lot of music over summer – but I did get hooked on some things, especially things related to books I was reading.

I wrote a whole lot more, just recently, about the summer rediscoveries – two of the things on that list were talked about in this segment.

First up I talked about Brian Eno – his biography On Some Faraway Beach and his recent compilation of film scores. And I played the song Under.

Then I talked about Bananarama – based on the book I’m currently reading. And the fact that this song keeps turning up – I rewatched The Karate Kid, I watched Hillbilly Elegy, I even wrote a poem about it as a result. So It was fun to play Cruel Summer live on air.

You can read my thoughts about the Brian Eno album here.

As always click here to hear the full conversation and the songs.
