Once a month or so I have a chat on RNZ on their Afternoons show with Jesse Mulligan. These things start – randomly and stop in much the same way. I hope to keep doing this. For a while at least. I think I started in December of 2015, so now four years into it or so…
This was my first session for 2020 and I wanted to make it count – so I focused on just one album, the brand new one by Drive-By Truckers. It’s been three and a bit years between albums, but The Unraveling is a strong return from the Truckers.
We played the song Thoughts & Prayers and I talked a bit about the history of the band and the political songs from this and the previous record. You can hear the song and the full chat about the album here.
I’ve also written a review of the new album– so click there to check that out.
We ran out of time to play another song from the album – though they were going to try to squeeze that in later in the show – I’ll leave that here also as I think, lyrically, it’s the finest example of writing on the new record, it’s called 21st Century USA.
