About once a month or so I have a long chat on RNZ about a particular music or a theme – for their regular Tuesday music features. Over the last two years, I’ve been slowly building up a chat on each of The Beatles. But how to finish with John Lennon? Well there was the 40th Annivesary of his death of course – and I knew that would be the timing, the right spot. Pay tribute and share some of my favourite songs. As I thought more about it – John’s often been my least favourite Beatle but I say that as a massive fan of both the group and his solo career – I realised his real strength as a writer was when he accessed his vulnerability. So I picked some of the songs that showed the trauma in his life and his way of dealing with it, or running from it.
It was the solo career only and of course just a handful of songs.
If you missed it you can listen to the full chat right here. And see below for just the songs I played and in the order I played them). There was a mix-up in the broadcast and one wrong song was played (in place of Out of Blue) so bear that in mind as you listen. The correct playlist is accessible in the Spotify link below.
