Reports are coming in just now that record producer and sound engineer Keith Olsen has died. There’s a chance that you have several records he had a hand in as part of your record collection. Put another way, there’s almost no chance his fingerprints aren’t all over the albums you know and love.
He’s perhaps best known for not only producing Fleetwood Mac but for getting Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham signed, producing their eponymous duo debut and then introducing Mick Fleetwood to the guitar playing of Buckingham; all but brokering the deal that saw Stevie and Lindsey joining the band.
Santana, Kim Carnes, Pat Benatar, Bad Company, The Scorpions, Whitesnake, Europe, Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Rick Springfield, Lou Gramm, Loverboy, Jethro Tull, The Grateful Dead, Eddie Money, Emerson Lake & Palmer…
I mean it’s just naming name after name after name – legends, staples, stalwarts. Classic rock radio.
Keith Olsen was one of the guys you learned about when you started learning the behind-the-scenes/behind the main players names.
The hit single Jessie’s Girl, the soundtracks to Tron, Flashdance, Top Gun, Footloose, even Vision Quest (which is in my record collection – along with those other soundtracks and so many of the times mentioned above).
But if it was just for the Fleetwood Mac stories I’d be a Keith Olsen fan. I’d be commiserating his passing. I just wanted to mention it here. He helped to realise many dreams. He brought a lot of music into this world.
