Making mixtapes was blue-collar work
back before I worked at all. Now it’s a
tech-gimmick in an empty-gesture
world, I’m old and tired and so
are my mixtapes. Doesn’t mean I don’t
mean them. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
listen. But it’s not what it used to be
and the problem is not with me, nor with
you. It’s just too easy to point, click and drag
and that makes it so incredibly sad – compared
with when days of sweat would result in a few
tape-clicks and the wobbly edits made it into
the cut, and some songs ran out only after
the tape. I liked that aspect the most I think.
It seemed to say, ‘I have more to say’.
It felt like the very best awkward ending.
