Poem: On Twitter

Bill Cosby is free
because a lawyer was paid
a heap of money
to prove they’re the best
at lawyering. Justice has
been severed.

Elvis Costello said he was fine
with Olivia Rodrigo making a song
that sounded like his – because his song
sounded like Bob Dylan’s and Bob Dylan’s
song sounded like Chuck Berry’s.
This is a better response than
Mick Jagger would have made.

Writing poems about things in the news
as soon as you hear them will very soon
be cancelled. I’m still writing up my response
to that. But I am mostly okay with it – since there
will be other things to focus on that will
age better. And because if I point out that Madonna
is trivialising a black, gay man’s kiss live on TV
by saying “I did it first” with regard to her phoned-in
lesbianism, I’ll probably be called a sexist again
on Twitter.
