Poem: Hopeful Homily

You or at least everyone you
know has got or will get
cancer and yet we still
are thinking only
of ourselves and always about
the bottom line.

The bottom line is actually to
be kind – to rewind, retrace but
not relapse.

The bottom line it actually to
find it in your heart to have
and make art – if not sense
in this world.

The bottom line is always
mentioned as if a threat:

That’s the bottom line, you
don’t want to bottom out, he
or she or they hit rock bottom…

be sure to stockpile because
you don’t want to reach the
bottom of anything nor be in the
bottom.

That’s how the globalised market
of capitalism broke down so many
doors. Made us feel like we were
approaching a bottom level, snapped
off the rungs on the ladder, all but
the bottom one.

Take a walk, have a talk, get outside.
Take your mind – at the least – elsewhere.
Have a pleasant life for just as long as
you can and wish the best for all others.

That’s what a friend would do.

We could all use an extra friend.
Whether we choose to believe that
or not.
