I always tell people
“Be like Talking Heads”.
It’s easy, right? It’s the
correct thing to do:
Make ten very good albums,
record eight of them in studios,
and two of them are for show – and
from various shows. Straddle
the seventies and eighties, bring
something of each decade to
the other. Have no line-up
changes, and four crucial and
contributing members. Be a team,
no one is replaceable. All in it. All
needed. All so very good. And there’ll
be fights sure, and jealousies or anger.
There’s no creation without dispute –
that’s why Christians go totally Ape!
Be like Talking Heads. Have hit singles,
great videos, a killer live show, strong albums.
Be Like Talking Heads. Make music that
pulses with the spirit of more than one world.
Capture Brian Eno’s ears and heart, be helped
along by his mind and soul.
I always tell people, “Be like Talking Heads”
It’s the correct thing to do. It’s about the
work and everyone connected was always
doing it. Punk band, tick. Funk band, tick.
Pop band, sure. Rock band too.
Be like Talking Heads.
Be like Talking Heads. Be like Talking Heads.
Best of luck. Because you’ll never do it. But
if the aim is there then maybe the work will
come close. You can but try. You must. You
should. Be like Talking Heads.
If you only could.
