The other day I shared a playlist from when I DJ’d a set called “The Other 80s”. It’s an idea I’ve had a while and revisited a few times – but I think the first time I put it into any sort of shape (if you can call it that) was at the old (no longer around) bar, Happy. The last Friday of every month was called “Vinyl Friday”; they’d get two or three record-playing enthusiasts or record-collectors along to play something – with some vague sort of theme. It wasn’t about DJing – which suited me just fine. It was just about playing songs – on vinyl – and creating some sort of themed-effort. So the night I had a go at it they had some Flying Nun specialists on first. Which was great. And then I played my first “Other 80s” set; that being songs from the 1980s but not the obvious efforts, or lesser known songs from big name bands and so on…
I’ve turned that setlist into a playlist. It’s a strange, beautiful mess to my ears. Maybe it is to your ears too. Then again, maybe not. Anyway, here it is:
