I’ve had this idea in my head for year – and I’ve had a few goes at translating it – an eighties DJ set that doesn’t include all the obvious (“pop”) moments; so it has blues and jazz and it has some of the lesser known acts, or lesser known cuts from the bigger acts. Of course, this isn’t quite realistic and when you start playing it on vinyl people ask you for certain requests. U2, R.E.M, that sort of thing, maybe Madonna or Cyndi Lauper too…so I add those in but try to play the lesser known or less obvious stuff, or at the least the things I like…
Not sure if it’s a thing that really works, or if it’ll really ever catch on, but I like it. I call it The Other 80s – the less obvious songs and artists from the 1980s. I’m a fan of the 1980s, I love all the big dumb pop singles, and have done stock-standard “eighties nights” too…just so you know…
Anyway, I think this is from the first time I tried an “Other 80s” night. So give it a go, see what you think. A few weird and wonderful selections, a few oddities, and some lesser known stuff…and then, of course, some of the big, bad, brilliant (stock-standard) eighties things too…
