The Buck Stops Here
Australian tenor and soprano sax player Paul Van Ross is joined here by Kim Kelaart (Hammond B-3), Hugh Stuckey (guitar), Craig Fermanis (guitar) and Mark Lockett (drums) for a program of Van Ross originals, eight songs, all stretching above eight minutes – stretching the CD to capacity. But it’s a warm, rich jazz outing, never boring, often triumphant.
It gives off a great feel/feeling – organic jazz that feels like a live club date, carrying the mood of sizzling small combo jazz; something that’s hard to pull off in the studio. Paul Van Ross and his colleagues nail it.
There are traces of funked-up jazz and softer ballads. It’s all lovely. All as you’d hope for. And it’s worth mentioning that Paul Van Ross is coming to play some NZ shows soon. Nice.
