Gimme Shelter [OST]
I’ve not seen the film and I’m not sure that I will – it doesn’t appeal, beyond the fact that there’s clearly some beautiful and arresting cues to be heard in the film’s soundtrack. This very much appeals to me, scratches that Max Richter itch, there’s a lovely sense of contemplation evoked in the very simple piano trickles accompanied by sympathetic strings.
Olafur Arnalds was a drummer in various Icelandic metal bands and has made music as a multi-instrumentalist that is closer to industrial music than the calm, meditative and often minimalist (non) pulses you’ll hear here. He’s really started to establish himself as a film composer/modern classical composer.
There’s a lot of bliss in this soundtrack – stirring, emotional moments too. In some ways I’m reminded of Decoder Ring’s soundtrack for Somersault and, you know what, I’m still a bit of a sucker for seeing the images that go with the music, so I’ll probably get to this movie eventually. But right now it’s the music that’s doing more than enough for me. (Just remember to delete the final track – a Celine Dion song. It has no business mingling with these beautiful instrumentals).
