Last year I was a day late, even slacker this year, sorry… but I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and thanks for reading Off The Tracks. Three full years we’ve been operating now – I say ‘we’ because it’s due to you and me.
I had a week off in Hawke’s Bay where I had the great pleasure of DJing before and after and in-between three great bands at The Cabana as part of Jakob’s annual Xmas shindig. I also played a bunch of 80s tunes on Christmas Eve at Turks in Havelock North and just last night I played some Kiwi music at the San Fran. That’s ‘work’ over for me now for the year. I say ‘work’ because I’m always working and never working. Working hard/hardly working…
I scrounge for coins and for ideas and usually come up short in both cases. But I give it a go.
I’ve already offered a Year in Review-type post over at Blog On The Tracks so I don’t want to repeat too much.
But it was a good year for Off The Tracks – going back through the monthly digests I reviewed more than I at first thought, though this year the focus was often away from just reviewing. The Vinyl Countdown ploughed on and probably picked up a bit of speed, there were more DJ sets to preview and then list and I tried to plug a few more local and international gigs. Though I’m now off the list of most of the promo people – so I actually find out about gigs when you do in most cases. Oh well…
We welcomed Michael Ross’ excellent Radio Nowhere series of guest posts (there’ll be more from him next year I hope) and Jon McLeary’s weekly Ghost of Electricity stories continue to pile up, heading towards 100 posts soon – a major milestone, and always a great read.
There was a new addition/edition from the Phantom Billstickers site – The Best Guitarist In The World – I’m going to continue that one, with a few more posts to come certainly…
At this stage I’ll be continuing on over the summer, just a wee bit…some days there’ll be a few posts, other days there might not. Jon’s weekly post continues, he has assured me, and I’ll be trying to put one or two things down most days. (Here I am celebrating an end to ‘work’ with a post about how I’m aiming to start working again…it’s a Doozer-mentality of course, the angry-comments pile up and knock over the tower of words and I just rebuild…or something…)
The big thing I’m really happy with this year is Sweetman Podcast – 11 episodes there for you to check out, and I reckon all of them have been good, great guests – and I thank them very much for enabling me, for enabling the podcast. I’ll have a new episode up in the coming weeks and from there I’m looking to continue this through 2016.
I’m not sure what the year ahead is going to bring, music-wise, writing-wise, I need some money. I need a change. I need to do something else…probably, but I want to keep Off The Tracks going as much as I can. Advertising has been hard to find. As has podcast sponsorship. But I’ll keep chipping away and see how I go. Apparently I burn bridges at an extraordinary rate of knots – or whatever the measurement is? It’s not my intention. My intention is to just keep writing and chatting to people – getting their stories and telling you mine. Finding my truth in things, of things.
