Only Lovers Left Alive [OST]
I absolutely loathed the film, couldn’t stand it. But I love the soundtrack. Go figure. Actually, that seems to be happening more often these days, I’ll check the film if I’m interested in it, or have heard its music already and liked it – and then sometimes it’s the score that stands out as the only redeeming feature. That’s pretty much the case for me here – also the Only Lovers Left Alive score can work, I reckon, as a standalone, you could listen to this without ever experiencing the film. Jozef Van Wissem and Jim Jarmusch have worked together – including making records outside and away from film scores – so there’s been a real connection fostered. Squrl is Jarmusch’s Crazy Horse-meets-post-rock band of slackers.
The Squrl tracks – like Spooky Action At A Distance (to pick just one highlight) – feature Jarmusch’s trademark, a borrowed squall of guitar and feedback over coasting drums. Van Wissem is on hand to add the colour in various places including mandolin/dobro-like lute accompaniment to give some hint towards the vampire theme of the movie.
I couldn’t give the film a second chance – no way. But I was listening to this music in anticipation of the movie that turned out to be a dreadful, turgid bore-fest and I’ll be listening to it long after – it creates a world of its own, and with time I’ll be able to forget I even bothered with that movie, just soak up this world or sounds instead.
