It was great news to hear that Joan Baez will play two New Zealand shows later this year; Auckland, Thursday August 29 at The Civic and Wellington, Saturday August 31, MFC.
I love her In Concert album, her covers of songs made famous by Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin are better than the “famous” versions.
I love her “comeback” album, Dark Chords On A Big Guitar, where again, intuitively, she finds a new truth in an old song (her version of Natalie Merchant’s Motherland for example, or her take on Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ Caleb Meyer).
Then there are the songs Baez wrote too.
She’s also worth knowing about – and worth remembering (fondly) – for how selfless she was in promoting Bob Dylan – and the folk/protest movement/ethos.
She will be amazing.
I’m really excited about this one. There’s also her writing (memoirs, diaries), her activism and speaking; she will be worth seeing for some of the on-stage banter and stories alone. And of course her song Diamonds And Rust.
Looking forward to this one…
How about you? Are you a Baez fan? What albums do you like? What are your favourite songs she’s written? And favourite songs she’s covered?
