That’s Not How You Do That: An Instructional Album for Adults
Here’s a cool idea – Jean Grae has released “an instructional album for adults” or, as she’s said elsewhere, “an album on how not to be a dick”; you’ll get that from the album’s opening-track proper. After an intro we have Don’t Be A Dick To The Waitstaff. It sets the tone for a mini-album of complaints against first-world complaints, it’s as if Ugly Duckling’s Taste The Secret has been reimagined by Grae in advertising-jingle-shtick mode. She mocks “fucking lunatics” that push their seats back on aeroplanes, line jumpers and serial complainers.
A couple of the album’s highlights are due to Detroit rapper Quelle Chris with No One Cares (STFU) and Use Your Fucking Headphones. These are Falling Down moments for modern-worlders, loud-talking cellphone freaks are put in their place, and it’s a great place for Grae to showcase her obvious humour. That’s always been known in her performances and across her albums but her she takes a goof-off idea and imbues it with just enough musicality and actual, obvious frustrations. In other words this is a sincere pisstake. And the gentle bubble of mildly electro beats that these monologues and gags and giggle-raps are placed over is the perfect match for this expression of urban ennui.
