So how about all the new stuff from 2018 already? We’re a month in to the new year and some terrific things have made it out into the world of music already. With many more to come of course. But here we go for starters. Five Songs For Friday…Five glimpses into some new musical magic…
1. Dream Wife, Hey Heartbreaker
A lot of talk about this group, and with good reason. The music is reminiscent of many vital, urgent, fun things – from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Le Tigre to those golden days of when The Strokes first burst onto the scene. Yeah, it’s all been done before, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a bore. (Or a chore).
2. Courtney Marie Andrews, Kindness of Strangers
She was on my list of best albums I reviewed last year and though she was only the opening act for a Jake Pugg show she also delivered one of the knock-out performances of 2017 for me. So I’m super-excited to hear about new music from Courtney Marie Andrews so soon. We have to wait another month and a bit for the album – but here’s a starter. Oh all right, here’s another track too…
3. Xylouris White, Only Love
New music already from Xylouris White. Anything featuring the drummer Jim White is something I want to hear. And this duo – drums and laouto (a Greek instrument from the lute family) – doesn’t disappoint. Folk’s version of free jazz? Fuck knows. But I’m on board…
4. The Limiñanas, The Gift
I can’t get enough of this album. I’ve liked the band’s other records too, sure. But this brand new one is super-fun and super-good and this track, with Peter Hook guesting, goes towards New Order in a new way. Magic.
5. Dark Divinity, Seasons of Dark
They made headlines because of their dicky t-shirts but it no doubt sent a lot of people to the music. I am a fairweather fan of the metal, especially the death metal. But if I can spot a melody then I am in. And this works for me. I look forward to seeing them play (they’re in Wellington) and hearing a full album. Bring it!
