Will Wood is a singer/songwriter with two albums to his name – Broken Man from 2014 and the brand-new Magpie Brain & Other Stories. He is about to head off around the country to perform a series of shows with poet and MC Tourettes. Here are five albums he’s loving right now…
– The Deslondes, The Deslondes: These dudes are the real deal: A New Orleans-based band I played with in Switzerland when I was on tour in Europe last year. Down-home working class country made by down-home working class dudes, this debut record from last year has great, gritty production and arrangements that give an authentic old-time country sound without sounding like they’re just aping the classics. The songwriting is fresh and the playing is incredible.
– Freddy Fudd Pucker, Hourglass Wine: This Berlin-based New Zealander has been putting out DIY folk/punk records for years and years, this latest release from 2015 features 9 of his best songs to date. Freddy (Tom to his friends) is a gifted lyricist with a knack for beautiful imagery, he’s also the fastest strumming guitarist I’ve ever seen with a right arm that must be made out of rubber bands. It’s not all breakneck speed though, the album ebbs and flows between faster and slower songs. I’ve been lucky enough to tour Europe several times with Mr Fuddpucker and learn the ropes from someone who basically lives on tour, he’s played in all but four of the states in the USA as well as all over Europe, the UK and the Antipodes.
– Team Dynamite, Shepherd’s Delight: As far as I’m concerned this is the best band in New Zealand right now. This 2014 album has since been followed up with another EP, and all their music comes with the same things: World class production mixed alongside two absolutely incredible rappers who just get better and better as time goes on. Hip-hop doesn’t get much better than this, go see them live if you can!
– The Vietnam War, The Vietnam War: This album came out a few years back and it’s a rare thing to see these Grey Lynn natives come out and play a show, but in a period of time where New Zealand is producing a lot of Americana/Country/whateveryoucallit albums, this has to go down as one of the greatest of all time. Some of the best songwriting you’ll ever hear with an incredible band to boot.
– Aesop Rock, Skelethon: I can’t get enough of this guy; I have all his albums and back catalogue on my phone and have been listening to them on the regular for years and years. He has a new record coming at the end of April that I am very, very excited for and I’m sure it’ll feature everything I’ve come to expect from Aesop Rock: Mind-bending rapping packaged up inside beats that come from all walks of life. This man sets the bar for being creative and original, not just in Hip-Hop but in music and art in general.
