Today I will be at A Vinyl Affair – Wellington’s Record Fair. I am pretty sure it will be my last time selling records there. Not because it’s a bad time – it’s a great time and a great place, but because it’s the end of the road for me as a record sell. Last year I sold up big time. It was great. Moved out a bunch of stuff I needed to sell at a time when I needed some money and no longer needed the records.
This time I am selling the last of what I have to offer that I no longer require.
Some good things too. I am selling Steely Dan and ELO and Ry Cooder and these are things that will always sell (and always should). I have Hall and Oates (probably far too much, hence the selling) and I have gems by Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin and James Brown too. These are all things I’ve loved and it’s time for someone else to love them.
Also, I will be selling the last of my Prince records – vinyl copies of some of his best albums (1999, Sign O’ The Times, Lovesexy, rare promo copies of some of the forgotten or late-career gems, Come and Musicology). I’m keeping Parade – because I love soundtrack albums. And I’m therefore keeping Batman and Purple Rain too – but Graffiti Bridge is in the pile to be sold, along with Around The World In A Day and a few other gems. A brand-new copy of the Prince originals of so many of the songs he wrote for others is surplus to requirements now, so that’s going in the sale bin too.
I love Prince.
But much like when I (eventually) knew it was time to sell up (almost) all of my Bukowski books – the same is now true with the Prince records.
So, if you’re in Wellington, I’ll be at A Vinyl Affair – Wellington’s Record Fair today, 10am-3pm at the Rogue & Vagabond. I’ll be selling the last of the records I no longer need. Looking to re-home them. I’m even selling my beloved Randy Newman records and many more besides. Including some of the kick-ass reggae I collected up over the first lockdown. It’s time for them to find some love elsewhere. If I fielded one question more than any other last time it was, “do you have any reggae?” And I didn’t. I really didn’t. Well, I had two Herbs albums and sold them both straight away. This time I have King Tubby and Bob Marley and Lee Perry and the Easy Star All-Stars and many more. For sale. For someone to newly enjoy them.
Yes, yes, I will probably buy a few records while I’m there as well. I’ve got a thing for soundtracks, as you’ll already know. So I’ll be on the hunt for some of them. If you’re in town come on down…
