The Mummies don’t want to do interviews. They don’t want to update their Facebook page – or Twitter account. They don’t hashtag #every #fucking #thing. But they do get together still to play some dirty rock’n’roll and garage/surf tunes. And they’re playing their first New Zealand shows in March – Auckland’s Whammy Bar on Saturday, March 12 and Wellington’s Bodega on Sunday, March 13, click right here for tickets/info.
There’s lots of good clips – and not so good clips (depends how you look at it I guess) of them doing their thing on the YouTube but check out this show if you don’t already know what The Mummies do. It’s going to be a blast to see them. And hear them. And feel them.
The Mummies have no interest or inclination towards social media. Why?
Social media makes it easy to talk with people all over the world. We don’t like talking to people in our own hometown, let alone all across the planet. The Mummies are not your friends. The Mummies don’t tweet, twat, connect, share, like, friend or give a damn.
What were some of the first records that got you interested in music? And what were the records/bands that got you interested in making music?
Here Are The Sonics, Boom, Acropolis Now, Thee Caesars Of Trash, Duty Now For The Future, Garage Punk Unknowns Volume 3, The first Specials LP, Let’s Get Small, Comedy Is Not Pretty, A Wild And Crazy Guy, The Fabulous Wailers At The Castle, Don And The Goodtimes – Where The Action Is!!
What is the special ingredient that makes a Mummies show?
What does it take to get The Mummies to perform these days? And will there be future – new – recordings?
As long as it’s fun, and somewhere we’re interested in visiting. Some money helps too. Yeah, we’re working some new recordings. If we’re successful, they’ll sound just as shitty as our old recordings. We’re not interested in modernizing or updating anything. We leave that to other bands to do. We’re happy sounding exactly like we’ve always sounded.
Why New Zealand now?
No one ever asked before.
What’s the best thing to have happened to music in your lifetime of making records and playing shows?
David Bowie kicking the bucket.
Bob Dylan not kicking the bucket.
What are the benefits of conducting interviews via email?
Not having to actually talk to someone.
And what are the frustrations?
Doing another interview.
What has been the highlight of The Mummies’ career?
Getting to see the world and get paid doing it just for being jackasses on a stage for an hour.
And the lowlight?
