E N T is a live band and a bedroom (solo) project – the common ground is that Nathan Taare is in control, whether leading a noise-punk ensemble or piecing together sound-splices of field recordings with deep ambient musical feels to accompany.
Taare’s EP/mini-album Central Complex was created from recordings he gathered throughout South and Central America, returning to an Upper Hutt bedroom to make moving Eno-esque shapes (UNA VISION DE LA SELBA) and beguiling organic trance ideas (EL PIRATE) beneath the warbled words and shifting worlds of these displaced and treated aural snapshots.
All at once this encompasses the noise/improve/experimentation of the Corpus Hermeticum label, Chris Knox under his ‘Friend’ persona and several times – when it’s at best (and particularly across PLAYA POLICIA) it’s like a beatless version of My Life In The Bush of Ghosts. Add in ideas and motivations from noise-rock, post-metal and music as sound installation and you have an intriguing and often quite wonderful collage of moods and movements from a clever young musician. I look forward to hearing (and seeing) more from him.
