Miami-based DJ Python (aka Brian Piñeyro) – who has also worked under the names DJ Wey, Luis and Deejay Xanax – here releases his new album which is structured as a mixtape but very purposefully, consciously flows like a slow-build album – its opening track and a half all but groove-less, establishing the ambient mood as Python builds on layers of reggaeton’s foundation with a deep house set.
It is very ambient wash with drums (ooophi), the hypnotic rhythms almost Krautrock-like in moments (Descanse).
The album’s centerpiece is the 12-minute ADMSDP which takes the whispered, almost ASMR-like vocals of LA Warman and mixes them up against a water-coloured backdrop of Underworld-lite shadings. Its subtle weight is felt right across the next track (Juntos) before we arrive at a song called: mmmm – and softly clanging keys and purposely ‘out’ sounding synth lines dance across a vintage Primal Scream club feel.
There’s a wonderful, lurking creep to this album – like a house mix without any focus at all on pulse – instead it’s about mood. You might never quite notice this album is there – until it’s not. Then you’ll be pining to hear it again. And again.
