BLP2020 “King of the Night” (ep)
The artist born Michael Jordan Bonema has, since 2015, been making waves with great Bandcamp releases including many mixtapes all under the moniker MIKE. He’s built a following and now he ever slightly side-steps by releasing this EP under a new name. But anyone that’s heard MIKE will recognise the flow and feel and sound and style as – now – dj blackpower.
BLP2020 “King of the Night” is a 9-track, 16-minute EP that, as with the likes of Tierra Whack, transcends its relatively short run time to feel far more full – that’s the emotional heft. And here MIKE/blackpower is grieving the death of his mother so that emotional weight becomes palpable as the EP rolls through. Nothing is longer than two minutes – skits turn quickly into songs, heroes are evoked (MF Doom’s sound is an obvious touchstone, check out bad News for proof). Recent mentor Earl Sweatshirt gave MIKE shoutouts and now his purposeful, bashful flow is aped here on Piercing thru the night.
By the time of STAY HUNTING, the EP’s longest track (at just 2:11 by the way) the vocals are almost not even there, a soft mumble that folds in under the decaying beats. The grief is taking over and telling the story. Old soul records are bounced on Mhm! And I think of when I could listen to Kanye West without feeling like a fraud (and without him sounding like one!)
This is an epic in miniature – a musical snow-globe. I hope dj blackpower becomes a lasting moniker. I’m keen to hear what’s next.
