Out of Blue (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
One thing that will always get me to see a picture is a Clint Mansell score. And so though I’ve yet to see Out of Blue it is now on the list. Because of this soundtrack album. Oh, I mean it was probably going to make the list anyway, since it’s a Carol Morley film and is based on a Martin Amis novel and has a cast that boasts Patricia Clarkson, Toby Jones, James Caan, Jacki Weaver and Yolonda Ross.
But I’ve been listening to Mansell’s music for films across the last quarter century now and certainly for the last 20 years he’s been one of my go-to film composers to always check in on. I mean I’m refreshing Spotify most weeks in the hope he’s just pinged out another movie or TV score. And though that might sound obsessive and optimistic it has resulted in a few hits. He’s been busy. He’s fairly prolific.
His Out of Blue score has been in my bed-time rotation for most of this year now. That’s where I have an album to drift in and out with, listening on headphones through the night. But I’ve always used this album to walk around town with, to sit and read to, to listen through as I would an album of classical or jazz or any other instrumental work.
All this and I haven’t the foggiest what the film is about, haven’t stopped to check – and have simply fallen under the spell of this music. As usual with Mansell I guess.
There’s an interesting mix here of piano-led tunes (We Are All Stardust) and pieces that are formed around a drift and waft that comes from nocturnal jazz perhaps, but is never quite actually that (Parallel Universe).
But there are cues that hint at drum and bass (Observation Changes The Result). This is all handled with the usual aplomb. Melodically rich, harmonically complex, so perfect as music in and of itself (This Black Hole’s Dark Heart) without even knowing (yet) how well it likely marries up to the images that birthed it.
Mansell really is one of the true masters of the modern film score. And Out of Blue is one of his finest. Which hopefully is saying something. As there’ll be more from him. More greatness. Since there always is. That’s the sort of certainty that means even more now in a world gone mostly rather mad.
