Songs For Heroes
The music of From Scratch comes from Phil Dadson’s compositions. Dadson worked with Neville Hall, James McCarthy and Walter Muller to perform pieces that were inspired by their musical heroes; music that straddles jazz, classical composition, avant-garde pop and theatre-pieces.
The music of From Scratch comes from banging on PVC pipes, tuned to created melodic rhythms (if you will). The music of From Scratch comes from handclaps and found percussion; from zitherum and from a restless musical mind.
Songs For Heroes plays out as one continuous piece, compositions tumbling in to one another. It’s remarkable and fresh and exciting – and it’s hard to believe this music is 20 years old.
Reissued by Rattle to celebrate its 20th anniversary this is most certainly a classic slice of Kiwi(ana) Composition; both serious and playful – often at the very same time.
